Britain's got Lousy Rotas - a competition PDF Print E-mail

Stories are reaching us that some of the kludges and schemes dreamt up to ensure compliance with the Working Time Directive have resulted in dire working patterns for doctors.

We are launching a competition to find the worst Rotas that Britain has to offer. One Remedy member sent us an Excel spreadsheet showing his rota. He commented that:-

The number of SHO's needed to run these two rotas is twelve but due to now having four vacancies the trust has been forced to merge these rotas into one and staff them using the remaining eight SHO's. As you can imagine, this is bad news for training (which is now non existent as we are either on call or taking the mythical two half days off which are supposedly built into the rota) and patient care as the elective patients are being cared for by F1's with critically thin senior support….I have included a sheet detailing the extra hours that we are now working above the agreed EWTD 'compliant' rota we were on. We have received no additional renumeration for this rota change and although we did agree to it as a temporary measure until August there was never really a serious option to refuse. The situation is a perfect example of the utter contempt with which we are treated by the management and the serious impact on patient care and junior training that pretending that we are EWTD compliant is having.
Is this the worst that Britain can offer, or do you know of a rota that is even worse? Remedy are offering a prize for the Trust that has designed the most unpleasant rotas. Our team of highly skilled judges are waiting to hear from you.

Send your entries to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and include a brief description of how the skilful construction has affected training and family/social life. The contest will close on July 27th, and the judges decision will be final. The identity of entrants will be kept anonymous. The winner will get a years free membership of Remedy; but the prestige of winning is more important than the prize.
