A proposed solution to EWTD implementation in 2009
from RemedyUK

The European Working Time Directive (EWTD) will have a significant impact on medical training in the UK. Traditionally, junior doctors have worked long hours. The 'New Deal' in 2001 led to a reduction in these hours, so that every junior doctor in the UK was expected to work less than 72 hours per week.

The EWTD seeks to reduce the maximum time that a junior doctor is allowed to work, or to train at work, to less than 48 hours. A Remedy UK poll has shown that most of our members feel that this is not long enough for adequate training.

At Remedy UK, we think that it is important to strike a balance. Doctors must not be overworked or exploited, but must have their training needs met. Our solution to this problem is the Barbados plan. Please read the document, and let us know what you think.
