MORE than 2,000 junior doctors started new jobs in Scotland yesterday after a chaotic recruitment process caused problems across the UK. Hospitals insisted it was "business as usual", despite concerns patients' services could be hit. The British Medical Association had warned that operations and appointments could be delayed. However, no health boards in Scotland reported any cancellations of appointments. The new online recruitment system was dogged by problems, leaving many doctors without training posts until the last minute. The system has now been abandoned. In Scotland, many junior doctors were only told where they would be working in the last few days, with some moving across the country at short notice. Dr Kevin Cormack, part of campaign group Remedy UK, said hospitals would have been short-staffed yesterday as junior doctors took induction courses. Original article here |
