The Remedy survey on Lord Darzi's reforms

Many thanks for the six hundred and forty five full responses that we received to our consultation on the Next Stage NHS Review led by Lord Darzi.  Broadly our results demonstrate what many of us would suspect - that doctors remain suspicious of the continued reform of the NHS because they fear that the positive talk will not be backed by positive action.

 A vast majority of respondents were sceptical of the ‘patient choice’ agenda, the increased use of the private sector and the idea of an NHS constitution, and  the devastating effects of the privatization and reform on training was of great concern.

 The idea of NHS MEE (Medical Education for England) was greeted with a lukewarm reception, many respondents feared that NHS MEE had the potential to be  another toothless body.  Run through training (RTT) as a blanket phenomenon was also unpopular. Concerns were expressed as regards current training systems with the EWTD being of particular concern.

MMC 2009 Specialty Training Plans

The DH is calling for a reduction in the number of specialty training posts, partly because of the projected consultant numbers and partly because of the difficulty in delivering adequate training to those in 'training posts'. This is the first time that they have recognised that large numbers of core training posts/programmes exist primarily to support service delivery rather than to train the specialists needed in the future.

MMC Inquiry

The Consensus Conference on the Role of a Doctor is carrying out a survey as part of the MMC Inquiry. Recommendation 5 of Sir John’s Final Report was that consensus be reached on the Role of the Doctor before the end of 2008. It is important for members of RemedyUK to have their views heard. Changes to the team

Chris McCullough, who was appointed Remedy CEO last autumn to oversee our transition from ad hoc pressure group to organization, has completed that task ahead of schedule and is stepping down. There aren’t the words to thank him for the invaluable work he has done, not just in making us lean, mean and fighting fit, but also in expanding our network of influence among decision-makers.
